Employment stats for June

Doubtless you have seen the headline from today's unemployment statistics: the unemployment rate is up to 5.7 per cent.


June saw 14,800 more PT jobs and 4,400 fewer FT jobs. There were 27,000 more unemployed persons.




June also saw significant jumps in the unemployment rates for Queensland and Tasmania (although, to be fair, these seasonally adjusted data series can jump around a bit).




Even in trend terms, Tasmania is well out of step with the rest of the nation.


By gender, in 2013 we are now seeing both male and female rates increase. In 2011 and 2012 it was only the male rate increasing.



On the hours worked front, we are seeing slow growth ...


But because hours worked is growing slower than the number people in jobs, we are seeing a shift from full-time employees to part-time employees.
